Question 1

A: 'Can I talk to Mrs White?', Jerry asked. B: 'I'm sorry, but she's not here. Would you like to leave a message?', said the secretary.

Accepted Answer

A) Jerry asked to talk to Mrs White. Her secretary said she wasn't there and asked if he wanted to leave a message.. „Ask to do something” cere infinitivul, nu gerunziul; o întrebare da/nu raportată introduce „if”, nu ordinea directă a cuvintelor; iar „tell” cere întotdeauna un complement direct de persoană („told her”), spre deosebire de „say”, care nu îl cere.

Question 4

... having the board's unanimous approval... the company's manager appointed.

Accepted Answer

C) Only after/was. „Only after” la începutul propoziției declanșează inversiunea subiect-auxiliar; verbul „appoint” este la diateza pasivă, deci auxiliarul cerut este „was”, nu „did”: „Only after having the board's approval was the manager appointed”.

Question 5
